Description

This two-day, hands-on, workshop is for personnel that operate (Authorized Users) or provide maintenance services for fixed industrial nuclear gauges, portable nuclear gauges, sealed source devices, and nuclear irradiators. This workshop will meet the minimum training requirements of States and of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for Authorized Users as specified in NUREG 1556, Vol. 1, Vol. 3, and Vol. 4.

Note: Radiation Safety Officers for nuclear gauge licenses should take the Academy’s more extensive five-day RSO class with the nuclear gauge elective.

This workshop will emphasize hands-on experience with real radioactive sources and examples of operational portable and fixed nuclear gauges. Day one will focus on developing a good understanding of the nature of radiation, concerns for radiation safety, how nuclear gauges and irradiators work, and State and Federal regulatory requirements. Day two will focus on licensing requirements, and how to set up and operate an effective radiation safety program. You will also get hands-on practice with all of the common radiation detection instruments as well as practice on how to conduct radiation safety surveys on actual nuclear gauges. We will review operating and emergency procedures. Day two will close with an overall workshop review and preparation for a closed-book exam. If you miss any questions, we will review the correct answers with you.
